Decorative concrete blocks are ubiquitous throughout Bermuda. Used as balustrades, fences and screens, they are a visual echo of the 1970s building boom fueled by the expansion of tourist air travel. They are a common marker of the human footprint on this rugged and rocky environment where practicality was a life essential. In my mind’s eye they have become emblematic of Bermuda. Block (Dissected Sphere) is a sculptural development of these symbols—a distillation of the natural and the man-made.
