Female Figure with Bowl

Dogon peoples, Mali

Wood

Gift of Dr. and Mrs. Bert McPhee and Karen and Kevin

5 x 22 x 4.5 in

The image of a woman carrying a head load is not purely anecdotal. Rather, among Dogon, sculpture can be a means of acknowledging
the work that a person has performed during his or her lifetime. At funerals, the toil of men and women throughout their lives is recalled and exalted in orations that enumerate their labours, contributions and personal sacrifices to their families and communities.
