Having followed the White Rabbit, Alice finds herself falling through a deep well which seemingly never ends until, eventually, she lands with a soft thump on a pile of dry leaves. Here, we see Alice falling through Bermuda’s Crystal Caves just as two young boys, in 1907, followed a lost cricket ball and accidentally discovered the caves in the process.
Their cricket ball sits on the surface, alongside a flamingo – a reference to the inhabitants of the nearby Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo – and the game of croquet which the Queen of Hearts invites Alice to play.
“Alice thought she had never seen such a curious croquet ground in her life: it was all ridges and furrows; the croquet balls were live hedgehogs, the mallets live flamingoes, and the soldiers had to double themselves up and stand on their hands and feet, to make the arches.”
