Old Bermuda House

William Howe Foote

American, 1874 – 1965

Oil on canvas, 24 x 24 inches

1917

Collection of Bermuda National Gallery. Gift of David L. White, OBE.

William Howe Foote’s time here was spent painting many of Bermuda’s houses.  It was his interest in the colour white that led him towards this subject matter.  This interest in colour and tone places him in the company of many artists throughout history, from Johannes Vermeer to the Impressionists.  In this painting, Foote has captured the colour array created by the unusual quality of light in Bermuda, a feature that continues to captivate artists’ attention today.
