Textile and interior installation

Gherdai Hassell is a Bermudian born, China trained, multidisciplinary contemporary artist and storyteller, based in Manchester, UK. Her work investigates memory and nostalgia to construct and deconstruct identity. She uses textiles, collage and painting to thread and weave histories and tales of transformation passed down through family lineages. Her work typically centers female bodies, simultaneously existing within realms of past, present and future. Her work ultimately is about migration, a gradual process of being and becoming the future.

She says: “This work is inspired by my continued research and interest in Nellie Musson’s Mind the Onion Seed book, published in 1979. The book inspired me to think about home and the interiors we inhabit. This site-specific installation includes recent textile work and is an assemblage of materiality and objects, layered, just like the onion. The colour green used in this works points to the onion as part of our cultural nature.”
