Zachary Stelios Marshall attended Rhode Island School of Design, graduating with a BFA in Painting. He works in multiple mediums including oil painting, drawing and sculpture. Marshall draws inspiration from medieval and early renaissance art, as well as the surrealist and metaphysical painting movements of the early 20th century. These influences are mediated by incorporating the aesthetics and visual cues of contemporary video games and anime. He has shown internationally in galleries in USA, Bermuda, and Portugal.

This painting is taken from a series in which Marshall creates a fantasy tableau which thinly veils allusions to touchstones in early human history. The works show a formerly mythical understanding of nature, the inclination to explore unknown frontiers, animal domestication, and city building—practices that can propel a civilization into ever greater complexities or ruin. He takes these concepts and renders their components in doll-like proportions allowing him to omnisciently examine them as miniature models. With the subjects at this scale, set in pared down environments, the paintings evoke theatrical productions or tabletop board games.
