Queen Street, St George’s, Bermuda

Bermudian, 1879 - 1970

Watercolour on paper

Gift of Joan Tucker Fowle

Early in the 20th century, sisters Ethel and Kate Tucker, daughters of artist Leonora Tucker, were the first to concentrate on selling their paintings to the tourist market. The sisters achieved great commercial success by reproducing many of their images in the form of postcards, notelets, calendars, stationary, playing cards and textiles.

Ethel and Kate, who worked very closely, received local and international recognition for their charming colourful watercolours of Bermuda. This watercolour painted by Kate shows the extent to which scenes of St. George’s appealed to tourists.
