Rachel at the Well, c. 1620

Giovanni Andrea Donducci (“il Mastellata”)

Italian, 1575-1655

Oil on canvas

Collection of the Government of Bermuda, the Hon. Hereward T. Watlington Bequest

36 x 48.5 inches

Donducci has painted this biblical subject within a dramatically illuminated classical landscape featuring classical urns, antique-style festoons (carved ornamental motifs) and a Roman triumphal arch. Jacob and Rachel are the central figures in the painting, standing on opposite sides of the central well. The fiery red of Jacob’s cloak symbolizes his passion for Rachel.
