Bermudian artist and educator Sharon Muhammad holds a BFA
in Illustration from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston.
A seven-time Bermuda Biennial artist, she has exhibited extensively
across the island. She says: “My art background is in the area of
illustration and although I decided very early not to pursue this
in a clinical sense, I am most definitely a storyteller.”
Muhammad says: “My concern as an artist is to cut through the
cosmetic and focus on the people who affect the environment
and are affected by it, as they are the heartbeat of the island.”
She adds, “My concern and preoccupation is with the concerns
and preoccupations of the common man anywhere.”
Here the artist focuses our attention on a stone cutter working
in a limestone quarry, a traditional method of construction used
in Bermuda since the 17th century.
