Tehuana is a term for the Zapotec women of the Isthmus of Tehunatepec in Mexico. These women are traditionally revered in Mexican culture due to their resilience against the Spanish settlers and ability to maintain a matriarchal culture despite colonialist influence, and this is represented here in this bronze sculpture. Castañeda’s figure relates to a strong presence and command’s one’s attention, much as a Tehuana would in her native home.
