In 2006 Alan Burland, an accomplished Olympic sailor, co-founded the Bermuda Sloop Foundation (BSF) together with Jay Kempe and Malcolm Kirkland. A unique educational platform, BSF offers hands on sailing experiences for students aged 11-25 aboard the Spirit of Bermuda, a purpose-built reproduction of a 19th century Bermuda sloop.
To date, over 7,000 Bermudian students have sailed on the Spirit of Bermuda, including 5,500 middle school students in the five-day residential programme, which is part of the Bermuda school curriculum, and an additional 1,500 young people aged 15-25 aboard the coastal and overseas voyages of discovery.
Representing both Bermuda’s maritime history and an investment in the future of Bermuda’s youth, the Spirit of Bermuda has travelled to the U.S., the Azores and the Caribbean.
Burland was Chairman of the Bermuda Sloop Foundation for 17 years and remains a Board Director.
