Christina Hutchings

Bermudian, b. 1953

Oil on paper

Collection of Karen Bell

Although these works are representational, the attention is on mark-making rather than figurative detail. The white frame, intentionally painted on paper, points to Hutchings’ interest in rectilinear composition, while the repetition of the subject matter is an example of her desire to capture the same subject repeatedly. “I’m not interested in the subject matter itself, but in an idea about the subject matter and in capturing it in a formal way,” she explains.
