Painted in 1956, this early example of Valentine’s work illustrates a bridge between painting and sculpture. Whilst the subject matter (a potted geranium) and medium (oil on canvas) follow tradition, the artist has purposely inverted the frame, which she incorporates into the artwork by painting two sides of it to mirror the colour of the flowers’ petals.
