Johanna Flath was born and raised in Bermuda; the natural beauty of the island inspired her to pursue the arts. She currently lives in Maine where she works as a high school art teacher. However, Bermuda remains indelible to her identity and artistic influence. She was artist in residence at The Children’s Museum of Maine and has exhibited at the Bermuda Society Arts, Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art and the Bermuda Arts Centre, Dockyard.

She says: “I am playing with botanical material and color to explore the ephemeral and transitory nature of life. The plants are printed directly on the paper, leaving a kind of fossilized imprint which then I draw into, coaxing out color and form, bringing our attention to these delicate plant structures. I really enjoy the “wabi-sabi” aspect of this process and finding beauty in the impermanence of things. As an artist, I begin with an impulse, attempt to articulate, experiment, let-go, and hopefully, discover something new each time.”
