The photographs in the exhibition all capture the majesty of the natural world shot on T-MAX 3200 black and white negative film. “The show is about shapes, lines and textures, accentuated by film grain,” explains de Roulet. “It’s not a body of work so much as it’s an exploration of a type of film through all walks of photography,” he says. “It’s not just one subject matter – it’s not just waves, it’s not just people, it’s not just landscapes. What connects it is high contrast, a lot of grain and, hopefully, emotion.”
The photographs in the exhibition range from the vast open landscapes of New Zealand and Tanzania to the overwhelming power of the ocean at legendary surf spot mavericks in California. Each share an underlying meditative quality. Even in the sheer force of a hurricane as it approaches Bermuda, distinctly captured in the bowed Casuarina trees, there is an innate sense of peace. “That’s framing, and light, and using it to tell a story. That comes from years of digital and film and applying it to making beautiful images,” he says. “It takes a while to see, and to develop the eye and your relationship with it, to where you understand how you can take just about anything and make a beautiful image out of it, if you stop looking at it simply as subject matter.”
He explains: “Photography is about how the light dances across something. I’m looking for the in-between moments where things feel surreal, or things feel quiet, and they feel still. They feel like you could just get lost there and sit in that moment for a very long time.” The exhibition is a stark contrast to the speed of both de Roulet’s surf portfolio and the pace of everyday life. “I hope that people don’t just walk through the Gallery. I hope they stand in front of every piece and take their time and put themselves in that moment,” he says. “We live such chaotic lives. I want you to just stop and be in the moment. Be in the moment with me.”
