In Before the Flood (2016), a documentary on climate change, we learn perilous facts about the planet’s rising temperature, such as industrial pollution, rising ocean levels, bizarre weather patterns, and more. The film reminds us of the fragility of our island’s ecosystem.
The landscape in Bermuda, with the island’s special quality of light, has been a source of inspiration for so many artists. American Impressionist painters flocked here for this reason. A tiny paradise in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, Bermuda is unequivocally one of the most beautiful places in the world.
We celebrate the island’s natural beauty in this selection of paintings, all of which was generously donated by the late Chairman Emeritus David L. White, OBE. Mr. White made it a life-long project to collect art, with most pieces having the subject matter of the island’s beauty. These artworks remind us of a time that is now long gone. In the context of today’s environmental issues, these paintings have a new potency. We hope that you will enjoy the artwork and consider, too, the fragility of our island’s ecosystem, itself a microcosm of the earth.
Please be active here and elsewhere in the collective mission to ensure the sustainability of our natural world for generations to come.
“We come from the nature and we have to understand what it is, because we are connected to it and we are part of it. And if we destroy nature we destroy ourselves.” – Edward Burtynsky (artist, Canadian, b.1955)
