From Pencil to Puppet Course
A 5 week intensive led by puppet builder and puppeteer, Kathryn Mullen
June 25, July 2, July 9, July 16, and July 23
Thursdays from 5:30pm – 7:30pm
$250 for BNG Members, $350 for non-members
Led by Kathryn Mullen, this 5 week course will take participants from pencil to puppet. In this course, participants will design a character, build a unique puppet, then bring their puppet to life through puppeteering.
Participants are expected to attend every session and may be required to finish some tasks outside of the session.
Participants will need to bring:
- 3 ft x 3 ft fur or fuzzy fabric
- This can be new fabric, or a repurposed blanket or soft coat
- Thread that matches the colour of your fabric
- Sewing needles
- Strong scissors
- Wire coat hangers
About Kathryn Mullen
In 1980 Mullen became the third full-time female puppeteer at Jim Henson Productions. Mullen spent a decade at the company, during which time she performed various characters on The Muppet Show. When Fraggle Rock launched she took on the roles of Mokey Fraggle and Cotterpin Doozer. She assisted Frank Oz performing Yoda in Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and she performed Kira, the main female character, in Henson’s feature film The Dark Crystal (1982). Other key roles include the lead in Nickelodeon’s Allegra’s Window (1994) and Between the Lions Leona the lion cub.
Kathryn Mullen has decades of experience as a puppet builder in addition to as a puppeteer, creating a range of puppets including Sam Spud – Potato Detective, currently on display in The Art of Michael K. Frith: From Pencil to Puppet.
